Ahoy, friend 🙂
“what IS my style?”
Can anyone really call themselves an artist if they’ve never asked that?
I bet you’ve asked yourself that - a lot. Maybe you’ve even been stressing about "finding your style"? But let me stop you right there.
Are you trying to find your style before you’ve even started creating?
Well. Sorry. You don’t “find” your style by thinking about it. You find it by doing.
Check it.
Tip 1 - Accept Style Happens Naturally
Don’t force it.
A signature style is great for marketability, sure. But guess what? There’s no good reason to “lock in your look” before you even know what you’re doing. That’s like picking a favorite dish to make before you’ve ever cooked.
Style isn’t something you force - it’s something that develops over time. The more you draw, explore, and play, the more natural patterns in your work emerge. The way you solve problems, the details you obsess over, the happy little mistakes you make - all those little tidbits add up to become your style.
So if you’re hesitating to put your work out there because you haven’t nailed "the look" yet - stop worrying about it and start making stuff.
Tip 2 - Find A Starting Point
Good news is you can get a foundation to speed up the process.
Here’s a little cheat to shape your style more intentionally:
Pick 3-5 artists you love - Art that you like is a good starting place
Study why you like their work - Is it their colors? Their linework? Their proportions?
Pick your favorite bites - Take 1-3 things from each that sing to you. Maybe you love one artist’s shading style but another’s brush textures.
Play with them together - Now mix and match the elements you picked.
Congrats! You Just Made a Style Prototype!
By experimenting with different elements, you’re already building something unique. And here’s the best part - it will evolve into something even more unique naturally. The more you create, the more your instincts will take over, and the more you will come through in your work.
Tip 3 - Use Feedback
aka. Are People Into This Style?
If you wanna make money from your art one day, you can test different combinations you made from step 2 (those “prototype” styles). You can play around and see what people connect with.
If you find one type of “prototype style” is getting a bigger response than others, that’s a sign that you have a style with promising marketability i.e. people resonate with it.
And it might surprise you what people respond to - that’s why you should try some things out and gauge feedback. You’re taking cues and inspiration from art that you loved, so there’s no reason others won’t enjoy those same elements - just your versions of them.
Ever posted a doodle that got 10x the likes of a polished piece? Truly, you never know what people will like.
So don’t stress about getting it "right" - just create, experiment, iterate, and see what clicks.
(this is more a suggestion for those who want socials and careers. more marketable art helps your brand grow)
Tip 4 - Keep Drawing
The big takeaway here is style isn’t something you “discover”. It won’t just explode before in a sudden moment of enlightenment. It’s gradual process. And your “style”, if you find it, will continue to evolve and refine itself.
It’s something you grow into and around. The only way to get there is to keep creating, keep experimenting, and keep having fun.
So stop stressing and overthinking, grab your sketchbook, and get doodlin’, you noodle.
Peace and Love,
Brosatsu
