You want traffic, right?
Don’t be coy.
I know you do.

Well nothing drives traffic faster than Search Engine Optimization - or SEO, for short. Any platform with a search bar uses SEO, but not all are the same, especially now in a post-AI world.

  • Google? AI snippets are messing things up.

  • People barely click links anymore when asking an AI.

  • YouTube? High barrier to  producing quality video content that performs.

But Pinterest? Pinterest is sitting there (mysterious to most) quietly begging to be used. And it’s an SEO powerhouse most people completely ignore.

Once you know what you’re doing, Pinterest can 10–100x your reach, because you’re making exactly what people are searching for. You don’t find followers. They find you.

And I’m not trying to brag. Here’s proof:

  • This example strategy (pic above) hit 30k daily views and 993k impressions within 90 days-  with only a few dozen posts.

  • In another example - this campaign targeting an underserved niche (“anime poses”) now has millions of impressions.

Pinterest is a secret traffic weapon.
Let me show you how to wield it.

What is SEO?

SEO is how search platforms organize information for their users.

Platforms like Google, YouTube, or Pinterest want to show the user exactly what they’re looking for. The better they do this, the more people keep using the platform.

SEO is simply the practice of crafting your content around the right keywords - the words and phrases people are actively searching for. When you serve those keywords, you serve the people, and Pinterest rewards you with traffic.

Think of Pinterest like a library. Just like a library catalogs books, Pinterest catalogs posts. That is, Pinterest’s only interest is giving people exactly what they want.

The Keyword Kickstarter System

The world of SEO can be intimidating, but it doesn’t have to be.

This tool won’t teach you everything at once - it’s designed to get you results fast and show you the way forward. Even beginners can see traffic in no time if they follow the steps.

We’ll do this by creating your niche’s keyword cluster and then put those keywords to work. By the end, you’ll have a ready-to-use list of keywords and a clear path for growth.

Here’s a pic of that “anime poses” niche I mentioned before - that keyword cluster I made that earned 2.08 million impressions in 4 months.

Pinterest Keywords Step-By-Step

Start With Searching Your Niche

Start with what you create or sell:

  • Watercolor paintings

  • Running shoes

  • Passive income tips, etc.

Don’t get too focused on optimizing for broad niches that are low supply and high demand (though that’s always awesome).

We’re focusing on keyword clusters, the big rankings come with time and authority. You should start by chasing a large amount of small ranking wins - they add up.

Keyword clusters = families of related keywords.
For example, if you sell running shoes, your cluster might include:
outfit, women, design, aesthetic, fashion

We’ll split these into two types:

  1. Long-tail keywords → for board names and post topics

  2. Single keywords → for bios, board descriptions, and pin copy

a) Keyword Cluster Part 1 - Autocomplete Mining

To start building our “cluster” enter the basic search title of what you do like "passive income tips" or "watercolor paintings" in Pinterest’s search bar

All the things you see in bold text (the autofill suggestions).

Step by Step:

  1. Type your main keyword into Pinterest’s search bar (e.g., “watercolor paintings”).

  2. Look at the bolded autocomplete suggestions.

  3. Write down (avoid duplicates):

    • The full phrases (long-tail examples: “watercolor paintings easy, etc.”)

    • Individual keywords (single words: easy, nature, for beginners, ideas, aesthetic)

Pro tip: These autofill terms show high intent searches, making them your first priority keywords.

People are actively looking for these terms. That’s why we use them for our boards.

Below the search bar, look at the suggested term bars along the top of the page.

Add these to your single word keyword cluster - again, no doubles.

Step by Step:

  1. Look at the suggested term bars under the search bar.

  2. Add these words to your single keyword cluster.

  3. Remove duplicates.

Now your single-word cluster adds: (easy, nature, for beginners, ideas, aesthetic, cute, loose, tutorials)

These super niche related searches/single words are slightly easier to rank and give fuel for those quick early wins - to pad our bio and content descriptions.

When you scroll through of your master niche keyword (like watercolor paintings) you’ll see these blocks of “related searches”

Add these to your long tail keyword list - they’ll help round out your boards strategy.

This gives you your core keywords. You’ll end up with a pile of a few dozen keywords.

Step by Step:

  1. Scroll your main keyword results to find the “related searches” blocks.

  2. Add these phrases to your long-tail keyword list.

These are perfect for boards and topic clusters - they guide your content roadmap.

💡 Score & Prioritize Keywords

Not all keywords are equal. Here’s a simple heuristic:

Autocomplete = high intent → focus first + primary boards
Related searches = high specificity → next priority + secondary boards
Related terms = moderate competition → fill gaps + extra content/bio padding

This gives you a roadmap instead of an overwhelming pile.

Putting Your Keywords To Work

Your keywords are useless if they sit in a notebook. Place them where they matter most.

Content

Use single keywords in your descriptions, alt-text, and pin copy.

Weave them into sentences that have all the keywords, but also act as a CTA to drive traffic to click. Learning to mix keywords and sales copy on Pinterest is an art all its own.

Here’s an example from our watercolor paintings cluster:

“Easy watercolor paintings inspired by nature. Perfect for beginners looking for simple, aesthetic ideas. Click to explore step-by-step tips and start painting today.”

Boards

Use long tail keywords (from the related searches and autofill) for board names.

Board Name = “Watercolor Paintings Nature”

Note: The descriptions of each board should be made from a secondary round of keyword cluster research for each of the terms! That means when you make “watercolor paintings nature” as a board go and research a keyword cluster for that specific search term.

Profile

Your entire profile should signal keyword relevance: bio, board descriptions, and pin copy. This tells Pinterest your content is relevant to that niche.

If you sell running shoes your profile should have those keywords like “outfit, women, design, aesthetic, fashion” etc. Example (running shoes niche):

“Discover the best running shoes, women’s outfit ideas, and fresh design inspiration. Aesthetic fashion meets performance running, with shoes and styles that look good and feel good.”

Templates

Board Name Template:

Think of your boards like mini-pages all individually targeting those autofill titles - each with their own sub-keyword cluster families. This tells Pinterest you have lots of authority in the niche.
[Keyword Cluster Name] + [Descriptor based on mini-cluster]

Pin Description Template:

Write your keywords from a relevant cluster into a paragraph that shows the benefit and drives people to an action/upsell/click.
[Keyword Cluster + Benefit + CTA]

Profile Bio Template:

Make sure your entire profile is telling pinterest that you are in that niche.
[Audience] + [Keywords] + [Promise]

To-Do Check List

  • [ ] Use your niche & define target

  • [ ] Autocomplete keywords collected

  • [ ] Related terms added

  • [ ] Related searches added

  • [ ] Prioritize keywords

  • [ ] Boards named & described

  • [ ] Pins drafted with keyword-rich descriptions]

  • [ ] Profile updated

Remember. Focusing on going for more specific targets than the big ones first.

The small, fast wins compound and lead to big wins. They also build your confidence and credibility.

What To Do With Traffic

SEO is just the start of a winning Pinterest campaign. It’s how you get the traffic.

Equally as important is how you use that traffic. Getting 1 million views a month is great, but not if no one is clicking through to your email, products, or offers.

SEO gets you views.
Now, convert them. This is where most beginners fail.

Key conversion strategies:

  • Design scroll-stopping content: Pins that match search demand, reinforce your brand, and convert clicks.

  • Read analytics: Identify which pins are working and why. Optimize based on Pinterest data.

  • Post consistently: Build a posting rhythm that fits your bandwidth but maximizes reach.

  • Lead magnets: Simple downloads turn browsers into email subscribers.

  • Digital products: Templates, guides, and downloads rank and generate passive sales.

  • Etsy integration: Link pins to Etsy listings with SEO-aligned boards for steady conversions.

SEO = 10% of success. Conversion is 90%.

This guide covers keyword research - the start of your Pinterest traffic system. But traffic alone isn’t enough.
