Howdy, art friend!

I see you.

Sometimes you feel like you’re against a wall with your art, and no matter what you try, nothing seems to fix it, right?

That little voice in your head is whispering, "you’re doomed. you’ll never improve. you suck!"

First of all, please do the following right now:

  1. take a deep breath

  2. take another deep breath

  3. take ANOTHER deep breath and hold it

  4. let it out slow

Feel better?

You are not the first artist to hit a wall, and you won't be the last. I promise you’re not doomed. Far from it.

Chances are you're just not learning the right way.

The Truth About Plateaus

Stuck on a particular issue?

You likely need a different perspective. For instance, even if Rembrandt himself gave you a year of one-on-one masterclasses, if you didn't vibe with his teaching style you'd probably learn nothing.

Not every great artist is a great teacher - or more accurately a great teacher for you.

Everyone learns and teaches differently. And that's ok!

Maybe you’ve been grinding through books and tutorials, but they feel like a foreign language designed to confound and depress you. Guess what? Try something else. There are endless ways to learn any concept.

For instance - I learned the best while in a monthly membership art community with Izzy Medrano many moons ago. He doesn’t do it anymore unfortunately.

Izzy would release a monthly video, give a series of assignments, then give concise feedback on your work over the following weeks. It kept me accountable and I liked the small pieces of highly practical criticism - it told me EXACTLY what was wrong. I get impatient easily and don't enjoy bloated long-form content.

But maybe you don't learn the way I like to learn? That’s why…

Find the Right Way to Learn for You

And find the right teacher for the problem you're facing!

Be mindful that you might like to learn different principles in different ways. There’s no single right way to learn art - there’s only the way that works for you. Not vibing with a certain instructor or material on a certain topic? No worries. Try someone or something else.

For instance, hate all my emails, guides, and poses? That's chill. Unsub, and find your mentor elsewhere. I promise my feelings won't be hurt. In fact, I encourage it.

Will you have to explore a bit? Yes. But it's worth it. Someone out there has explained the exact concept you’re struggling with in a way that will make total sense to you.

Personally - I learned A LOT about composition watching Dave Rapoza work. But I gained more insight about color theory from James Gurney. It’s ok to have different mentors for different topics.

Like my specialty is anatomy, cartooning, and online business as an artist. When it comes to those 3 I can go for days, but (while I can draw landscape) you will def find a better teacher for environment pieces.

Keep Going - You Will Improve

Plateaus feel terrible, but they’re just a sign that you need a new approach.

Keep experimenting with different learning styles, and most importantly - please please please don’t give up.

ALSO - All of the above is great theory, but it's completely worthless if you aren't actually practicing your craft.

Don't forget to actually make things! OK?! At least 3-4 times a week.

Now relax, and know that your breakthrough moment is on its way.

Eternal Peace and Love,
Brosatsu
