Howdy, art friend! 😁
Ever feel frustrated because no matter what you create, you want to rip it in half, pour gasoline on it, then set it on fire - watching little bits of it peel off and flutter into the wind?????
⭐🎉 CONGRATU-friggin-LATIONS 🎉⭐
You're an artist!
Bad news: You will never escape the potential of that frustration. I still get it sometimes after working on something for hours - maybe an eye or the light is a little off.
Good news: The feeling doesn't mean you're a failure. There's nothing actually wrong with you. Quite the contrary. It means you're improving.
Dissatisfaction Means You're Learning
Your artistic intuition levels up before your ability to create does.
When you feel that frustration you’re actually starting to sense mistakes that you might’ve completely missed before. It means you’re developing your creative senses.
Work feels flat? You're noticing weak composition and structure
Poses feel stiff? You're starting to understand dynamic movement
Anatomy feels off? You’re learning an intuitive sense for natural proportion
So chill.
This is all part of the process. Every artist, no matter their skill level, goes through these phases incessantly where their work doesn’t match their expectations. It doesn’t mean you’re bad - it means you’re growing.
“What Do I Do With Frustration?”
Harness it and rejoice!
You are receiving a clear sign of where to go next in your artistic journey.
Instead of spiraling into self-doubt, use that discontent as a clue. When something looks wrong, that’s your brain telling you exactly what to focus on next.
Here’s what to do:
Pinpoint what’s bothering you – Is it composition? Anatomy? Lighting? The more specific you can get, the easier it is to fix.
Seek targeted learning – Watch a few tutorials on the subject holding you back, or study the work of people who you admire.
Apply it and work through problem. - If your poses are stiff, do more dynamic figure references. If you can’t sing through passaggio, find some exercises. If your character arc feels weak, go study hero’s journeys.
Give yourself some credit – If you can spot mistakes, you’ve already improved. Recognizing flaws is the first step to fixing them.
The ONLY Time to Worry
The real danger is not hating your work - it’s finding nothing wrong with it. If you never see room for improvement, you’re stagnating. If you ever think you're work is perfect, a thousand apologies but, you’re delusional.
You want a balance between creating things you're satisfied with technically while being able to recognize what you could've done better.
And I promise you there is always room to grow in art - there will ALWAYS be something.
So, if you’re feeling frustrated:
Start with a deep breath
You didn't fail
This is how progress works
Take an honest look at your art
Figure out what's holding you back
Work to correct it
Trust the process
I look forward to the day I have nothing more to teach you 🙏
Forever your star brother in arms,
Brosatsu
